Kiev metro history
Kiev metro was the third one constructed in the USSR after Moscow and St. Petersburg. The first line was opened in 1960 and occupies the 24-th place in the world passenger traffic. The first plans to construct underground traffic line in Kiev date back to 1884. But the city officials were afraid to construct something “unusual”. Then the idea came back in 1916 when the Joint American-Russian Trade Chamber initiated the construction of underground traffic system, but the turbulent years of the Civil War (1917-1920) postponed these plans. At last the plans were resumed in 1937 but they were not completed due to the WWII. And only in 1949 the Ukrainian Government started these plans again. The constructors faced very big difficulties caused by Kiev hilly land relieves, underground waters and moving sands. The first line was opened in 1960.
