1500th anniversary of the foundation of the Kiev

The museum was inaugurated on 26 May, 1982 when Kievans celebrated the 1500th anniversary of the foundation of the city. The date was rather conventional, many scientists had arguments that Kiev existed before 482 and later these ideas were proved by archaeological excavations and topographic researches. But the decision was made, many architectural and cultural monuments were specially reconstructed and renovated to be opened on that date. It was really a very big and pompous celebration. The whole Soviet Union marked this date, everybody gave credit to Kiev not only because it was the capital of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically it was the “mother of all Rus cities” and it was the cradle of Orthodoxy. Since 1982 we traditionally celebrate the “Day of Kiev” on the last Saturday-Sunday in May.

Museum and “Day of Kiev”

Unfortunately the museum within the years of its activity had to change several premises and only in 2012 it got this building, but we must admit that it is too small and not well adjusted for the museum hall, which is why the biggest part of the collection of the exhibits is in its depositories.  But nevertheless here one can find authentic ritual and cult objects, old postcards and photos, rare books and old household utensils. The museum organizes thematic exhibitions dedicated to famous Kievans or other celebrities who visited the city. Of great interest was the exhibition in 2014 dedicated to the centenary of the First World War showing how Kyiv lived at that time.
