Ukraine, motherland of best
The museum was opened in 1970 and it was the first one of that kind in the USSR. More than 3 000 exhibits tell about the history of sport events in Kiev starting from the first Russian Olympic Games that were organized in our city in 1913. Numerous photos show the development of physical education and sports movement in Ukraine in different periods, tell about the famous athletes of the past and to-day celebrities, and show the participation of Ukraine in the Olympic movement. One will be impressed by the collection of cups, medals and other decorations of Ukrainian sportsmen. Museum has one unusual exhibit – the Lewis Cup, an American soccer trophy established in 1914, the last winner received it in 1963 and was presented to Kiev.
Many famous Ukrainian athletes donated their private things and awards to the museum. You will learn more about football player Andrei Shevchenko, chess player Ruslan Ponomariov, legendary athlete Sergei Bubka (men pole vaulting), swimmer Yana Klochkova, figure skater Oksana Baiul, gymnast Lilia Podkopaeva, heavyweight boxer’s brothers Vitalyi and Vladimir Klitchko. In June 2014 these famous boxers opened their own exhibition with about 70 rare items that tell about their life and records. In 2013 Kiev Olympic Stadium marked 90 years and in addition to the Museum of Sports Glory a permanent exhibition dedicated to the stadium was opened.
